The infl uence of air conditioning changes on the effective dose due to radon and its short-lived decay products

چکیده
Radon and its decay products are the main source of ionizing radiation in non-industrial buildings. They are responsible for about half of the radiation dose people in Poland are exposed to [1]. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that originates from the decay of radium (226Ra) in the primordial uranium (238U) decay series. Radon concentrations in buildings are usually higher than outdoors and largely depend on geological structure of the bedrock where the building is situated, as well as the construction and building materials used [2–4]. Radon concentrations indoors are also impacted by the air exchange rates [5]. Concentrations of radon and its progeny indoors are characterized by a daily and seasonal variability, which is the result of the difference between indoor and outdoor air thermal parameters, air pressure and ventilation conditions [6]. Aerosol particle concentrations and their size distribution can also be relevant for radon progeny concentration [7–9]. The highly energetic alpha radiation emitted by radon and its progeny can be harmful, as high doses The infl uence of air conditioning changes on the effective dose due to radon and its short-lived decay products Dominik Grządziel, Krzysztof Kozak, Jadwiga Mazur, Bernard Połednik, Marzenna R. Absorbed Dose Assessment from Short-Lived Radionuclides of Radon (222Rn) Decay Chain in Lung Tissue: A Monte Carlo Study
Introduction: Internal exposure to radon gas progeny can lead to serious biologic damages to the lung tissue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the absorbed dose by lung tissue due to the exposure from short-lived radioactive products of radon (222Rn) decay using Monte Carlo simulation. Material and Methods: A lung equivalent p...

Based on the last presented reports of UNSCEAR, inhalation of radon gas and its short-lived decay products is a major contributor to the human exposure from natural radioactivity. Lung cancer is the known effect on human health from exposure to radon in air. Radon is found in outdoor air of buildings of all kinds. The main important isotope of radon is 222Rn. Radon (222Rn) is a noble gas...
متن کاملEnvironmental thoron (220Rn) : A review
Ever since studies on uranium miners established the presence of a positive risk coefficient for the occurrence of lung cancer in miners exposed to elevated levels of 222Rn and its progeny, there was a great upsurge of interest in the measurement of 222Rn in the environment and considerable data is generated on the levels of 222Rn in the environment across the worlds and is periodically ...
متن کاملEffective Dose Rate of Radon Gas in Jooshan Hot Spring of Kerman Province
Background & Aims: Human beings are constantly exposed to different radiations that have always been recognized as a health hazard. Radon -222 and its daughter products are major sources of natural radiations and a significant total inhalation dose is related to them. Hence, the measurement of radon activity in the environment has gained an increasing importance. In this study, with the measure...
متن کاملExposure of school children to alpha particles
Background: A substantial part of the public’s natural radiation dose is due to the inhalation of radon gas. Most of the exposure occurs indoors where the airborne concentration of radon and its decay products is usually higher than outdoors. Materials and Methods: Radon activity concentration has been measured twice in 50 classrooms in 5 levels (10 each) during summer and winter using solid-st...
